Machine Guns (and Silencers, and SBRs, and SBSs) are NOT dangerous

The President is going to unveil his “New Executive Actions to Reduce Gun Violence and Make Our Communities” today. One of the points on the White House’s Fact Sheet is:

Require background checks for people trying to buy some of the most dangerous weapons and other items through a trust or corporation. The National Firearms Act imposes restrictions on sales of some of the most dangerous weapons, such as machine guns and sawed-off shotguns…

The most dangerous weapons? These weapons are by definition the least dangerous weapons.

The same Fact sheet states people filed: “more than 90,000 applications in 2014.” This means that just about 100,000 silencers, short barreled rifles and/or short barrel shotguns are purchased every year. If these items were dangerous we would have seen a corresponding uptick in crime. Especially crime committed with NFA items. That has not happened.

There are very few crimes that involve NFA items. Almost zero when it come to machine guns. Every crime I can find that involved a suppressor or machine gun the item in question was  illegal.

So why are they focused on our NFA stuff?

Gun control is not about guns.
